Uzbekistan's Gulnara Karimova linked to telecoms scandal

t BBC has reported that Investigators in Switzerland and Sweden are probing alleged links between a leading European telecommunications company and a high-level multi-million dollar fraud and corruption scandal in Uzbekistan. Authorities in Sweden also froze €30m in the country in connection with a row in which Sweden’s telecom giant TeliaSonera was accused of paying about $340m to Karimova to access the telecom market and to buy the mobile operator Ucell in 2007. Over $600m, which belonged to Karimova, remain frozen in several Swiss banks since last July, according to a investigative report conducted in Europe. Uzbekistan’s neighbours were ranked higher in International Corruption Index. Tajikistan 157th with 22 points, Kyrgyzstan 154th with 24, Azerbaijan 139th with 27 and Kazakhstan and Russian sharing the 122nd place both scoring 28 points.
